Every cycling era has its legends and unbelievable feats of endurance and the Tour de France is always able to deliver the heroes, but who is the best rider to have ever conquered the French cycling race?
Of course the riders of today are faster and climb steeper mountains than the riders of the early years of the Tour de France, but todays riders are also blessed with better equipment, better nutrition and huge numbers of masseurs, managers, mechanical engineers and other supporting staff.
During the different Tour de France years you will also find considerable differences in the level of competition. Sometimes the yellow jersey had to fight riders of almost equal strength all the way to Paris, while in other years the winner was so far ahead of the runner up that he almost did not have to pedal the last week of the race. Which win is most impressive?
